Trees, roads and snowflakes surround our car. We are stuffed full of Christmas stuff I forced a guy—who is a hitman and who I am seriously falling for—to buy for me. He is talking to me about how proud of me he is, for doing so well. Then he is cursing himself for letting me ever be near the place. He goes back and forth, and I can see how tight he has the steering wheel gripped in his hands—those knuckles are so white. I reach out and gently touch his knuckles, and I end up distracted by how calloused those hands are.

It’s funny, when I look at this man— my protector, my savior, the one who has taught me to kill—I feel this yearning deep down inside of me. This craving to throw myself into his arms and completely submit to his power. I don’t know if I want to submit to him like a slave… I have no desires to wear a collar or be spanked for being a bad girl I just want to have him as mine, and I want him to have me as his. He’s been holding himself back from me, protecting me from himself, and I realize it now, I can see he wants me just as much as I need him.

Yes, need. I need him.

In school they taught us the difference between needs and wants. Wants are what we desire for ourselves. Needs are the necessary things for our survival. Air, water, food, shelter… and now Lucky. I need those things to survive. I don’t just mean his protection; I need that body of his taking me as his woman. Over and over.

Something inside me is still broken though. I go from crying my eyes out, to silencing him as I—and my hands—are fascinated by the way his hands feel. I sit there, touching him, learning him and before I know it we are pulling into our driveway. He called it our home and it’s our driveway now.

We pull into the garage with me staring at him, my cheeks sticky with tears, and my hands wrapped around his arm. My eyes lift to his face and I think he’s looking at me like I’m nuts or something.

“Mia…”

I shake my head and get out of the car. He sits there—probably wondering how he got stuck with the crazy girl—before sliding out. Popping the trunk, he starts unloading all the stuff I bought.

“Get that later, Lucky.” I say, reaching my hand out to him.

I don’t know the war that is raging behind Lucky’s eyes. All I know is mine, and I am bound and determined that this is what we do. I don’t want to be alone anymore; I only know peace when I have his arms wrapped around me. He is so big and scary to me; he is the monster that was hidden under my bed or lurking in my closet all those childhood years. But I’m ready to tame my monster. He’s mine—whether he knows it not.
